Help! My Washer Stinks!

Do your clothes smell dingy? No, silly! I mean your CLEAN clothes! After you’ve run them through the washer with your favorite scented detergent and they come out of the dryer nice and soft, but….stinky?

You can’t figure out where that smell is coming from, so you lean over and sniff the washer itself and BAM! The smell smacks you right in the face!

What causes that stinch? Well, as you know, our bodies are constantly covered in oils, bacteria, and other contaminants that make their way onto our clothing. The washer normally washes these nasty little boogers out, but where do they go from there?

Well, you’re right, most of them find their way down the drain and into the sewers. But some of them end up stuck inside your washer. Oils hold on to things like dirt and bacteria, so the oil from our skin attaches itself to the inner workings of our machines, and helps to accumulate the smelly bacteria.

Now, don’t flip out on me here, bacteria literally LIVE on your skin all the time, so don’t go throwing out the washer because you think it’s infected with ebola or something. It’s not going to make you sick (although I wouldn’t suggest eating out of it).

So how do I get rid of it?

I’m glad you asked! The first thing to do is run the washer through a clean cycle. Some machines have a designated cycle specifically for cleaning, but if yours doesn’t that’s ok. Just run it through a regular high temp cycle, but be sure to use bleach. There is no need to use detergent, the bleach will work just fine on its own.

Another option is to use AFFRESH washer cleaning tablets. Just run the washer through a high temp cycle with the tablet, and viola! The scent is gone! AFFRESH tablets can be purchased here at APPLIANCE PRO for $8.99 for a pack of 3.

If you try these options, and the smell persists, you may want to give us a call: APPLIANCE PRO 828-676-1169, and let us come out and see if there’s another problem.

Your washer should be run through a clean cycle about every 500 loads to keep from having the stinkies.
